The Tennessee Titans are expected to use their franchise tag on tight end Jared Cook, according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean. The team has not been able to work out a long-term contract with Cook, and this would allow them to keep the free agent for the 2013 season. Tagging Cook means he would make around $6 million next season.

Cook and Tennessee haven’t been able to work out a contract extension, which will likely lead to the team applying the franchise tag to him.

Cook finished the 2012 season with 44 receptions for 523 yards and four touchdowns. The four-year NFL veteran has piled up more than 1,700 receiving yards in his career and has appeared in 59 games for the Titans, including 11 starts.
If the Titans were to apply the franchise tag to someone else, it might be placekicker Rob Bironas. The time period in which the team can place a tag on one of its free agents begins next week.
