The St. Louis Rams want to re-sign wide receiver Danny Amendola, but they have a long way to go before the two sides can agree on terms. Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the two sides are far apart in contract negotiations.

The Rams and their best wide receiver have a long way to go before signing a new contract this offseason.

The Rams are especially thin at wide receiver with Amendola and Brandon Gibson both scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on March 12, leaving them with just three receivers on the roster. Coach Jeff Fisher wants Amendola, the Rams' most productive receiver, back, but isn't worried at the moment. "The free-agent market, there's options out there, and it's a great draft for a receiver this year," Fisher said.
St. Louis tried to add some depth to its receiving corps when they claimed Titus Young off waivers from the Lions, but the Rams released him just nine days later. That leaves St. Louis with Austin Pettis, Chris Givens and Brian Quick as the only three receivers currently under contract.
Last season Amendola led the Rams with 63 receptions, despite being limited to just 11 games due to various injuries. He totaled 666 yards and three touchdowns as a receiver and also served as an effective punt returner with 17 returns for 122 yards. Amendola, 27, has been with the Rams for four seasons and blossomed into one of the better slot receivers in the league. In Week 2 against the Redskins he showed his potential when healthy with 15 receptions for 160 yards.
The Rams aren’t expected to re-sign Gibson, making the pursuit of Amendola all the more important. The remaining three returning Rams receivers combined for 83 receptions and 1,115 yards in 43 games last season. All three are inexperienced and will need someone like Amendola to serve as their leader. Pettis enters his third season in 2013, while Givens and Quick just completed their rookie year.
