NFL Combine 2013: Matt Barkley’s shoulder injury will keep him from throwing

The USC quarterback will provide NFL teams with documentation from Dr. James Andrews as to why he isn’t throwing at the NFL Combine.

Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

NFL teams already knew that Matt Barkley was not going to throw at the NFL Combine, and will receive medical documentation from Dr. James Andrews that supports his decision, according to Pro Football Talk.

Barkley apparently suffered a Grade 3 shoulder separation while playing for USC this past season, and the injury hasn’t completely healed yet. He should be ready to go for USC’s Pro Day on March 27, and needs to put on a good performance if he wants to climb back into first round consideration. Barkley will still be in attendance at the Combine to interview with NFL teams, but he won’t test his shoulder just yet.

Barkley played in 11 games for the Trojans in 2012, completing 63.6 percent of his passes for 3,273 yards and 36 touchdowns, but also threw an alarming 15 interceptions. That number represents a career high at USC, one more than the 14 he threw as a freshman in 2009.
