Pierre Garcon injury: Redskins WR does not need offseason surgery

Garcon won’t need surgery to repair the foot injury he dealt with throughout the 2012 season and should be 100% healed with continued rest.

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon is recovering from a foot injury that bothered him throughout the 2012 season and will not need surgery during the offseason according to John Keim of the Washington Examiner. Garcon had a tear in the plantar plate around the second toe on his right foot that sidelined him for six games and slowed him for others during the season, but rather than undergo surgery, Garcon has been prescribed rest.

Garcon suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Redskins season opening game against the Saints and missed the next two games. He returned in Week 3, but was ineffective in the next two games he attempted to play. Garcon then sat out the next four games and during that time got diagnosed with the torn plantar plate. In Week 11 he returned to the field and helped spur the Redskins offense to a seven-game win streak and playoff appearance, but was never 100%.

Offseason surgery was a possibility, but after extended rest the injury has begun to heal. It is expected with continued rest that Garcon will be 100% by the start of next season.
