Giants will ‘probably not’ use franchise tag
New York Giants owner John Mara said his team will “probably not” use the franchise tag on any of their players this offseason.

If the Giants had decided to use the tag, most believe it would have been used on left tackle Will Beatty. The Giants would like to hold onto Beatty, who was finally able to stay healthy and started 15 games last year, putting in the best season of his career. The tag value for an offensive lineman would be slightly under $9.7 million for the 2013 season, a number the Giants would like to avoid paying if possible.

The Giants could have potentially used the tag on either safety Kenny Phillips or tight end Martellus Bennett as well, but Beatty was always considered the most likely option. Wide receiver Victor Cruz is a restricted free agent and the Giants would like to lock him up to a long-term deal; by avoiding the franchise tag they should have more money to negotiate with Cruz.
