Bart Scott could return to Jets at lower salary, according to report

The Jets linebacker and defensive leader could return next season at a reduced salary.

Ed Mulholland-US PRESSWIRE

Nearly everyone believed the Jets would release linebacker Bart Scott in a move to dump salary, but now rumors have surfaced that Scott may return to New York next season at a reduced salary. Brian Costello of the New York Post, who tweeted that the Jets had released a group of other players, followed that tweet with the rumor that Scott could return at a lower salary.

Scott, 32, has regressed in recent years and isn’t the same player he was when he came to New York on a six-year, $48 million deal. Last season Scott recorded 60 tackles, 2.5 sacks and one interception in 15 games. Despite Scott’s reduced production, he remains one of the emotional leaders of the Jets and is valuable to the team in that role.

The Jets were $26 million over the cap before cutting linebacker Calvin Pace, safety Eric Smith, and tackle Jason Smith, three moves that saved roughly $26 million. Still, Scott is not worth the nearly $7 million he is due in 2013 and could still be cut. If the Jets keep him on the roster, it will almost certainly be with a renegotiated contract.
