NFL free agency rumors: Reggie Bush could land with Detroit Lions

Free-agent running back Reggie Bush could be a good fit with the Detroit Lions if they can figure out a way to afford him.

Jim Rogash

The idea of free-agent running back Reggie Bush heading to the Detroit Lions is getting more and more attention as free agency approaches. Bush, who spent his last two seasons with the Dolphins, would be the type of change-of-pace running back and receiving threat out of the backfield that the Lions need.

The Lions are low on cap space with only $3 million available and with many unrestricted free agents on their roster, but want to add a running back like Bush to pair with Mikel Leshoure. With the career of Jahvid Best likely over, the Lions are looking for a receiving threat at running back, a role Joique Bell filled last season.

Last season Bush ran for 986 yards at 4.3 yards per carry and added 35 receptions for 292 yards, but Bell was one of the best receiving backs in the league with 485 yards on 52 receptions. It is thought in an offense that involves its backs in the passing game, Bush could surpass Bell's numbers and be a big play threat, which he proved at times with the Saints and Dolphins.

Various Lions have begun courting Bush, with quarterback Matthew Stafford following him on Twitter, and wide receiver Nate Burleson openly recruiting Bush on the NFL Network on "NFL AM" on Monday. "If I can get Reggie Bush in a Detroit Lions uniform, ooh-wee, watch out," Burleson said while discussing the possibility.

Detroit will need to free up more salary cap room to be able to make a serious run at Bush, but it is expected that some players, such as Stafford, could rework their contracts to offer the Lions some cap relief.
