Steve Breaston: From witness protection to free agency

The former star wide receiver is now just hoping to find work after being benched for no real reason.

On Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs announced the release of wide receiver Steve Breaston and tight end Kevin Boss in an attempt to make more cap space for the signings of other in-house free agents.

Boss’s release came as no surprise after being signed last offseason to a deal before getting hurt and almost missing the entire 2012 season. Breaston however is a much different story.

After signing with Kansas City two years ago to be Dwayne Bowe's compliment, Breaston had a productive 2011 season with his ex-Arizona offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

Then, last season happened. Despite the Chiefs needing a playmaker desperately, head coach Romeo Crennel decided to deactivate Breaston more often than not, putting in rookie Devon Wylie among others instead. Breaston dressed for nine games and made seven catches for 74 yards all year.

It was a mind-boggling decision by one of the more embarrassing head coaches in recent memory, just one of many reasons why Crennel is now justifiably unemployed.

Kansas City now has more flexibility to re-sign Bowe, who is the only proven receiver on a team that struggled to score 10 points per game last year. Outside of Bowe, the Chiefs have Jon Baldwin and Dexter McCluster, two high picks who have talent but have yet to break through to a star level.

As for Breaston, it's hard to imagine a team like the New York Jets or Cleveland Browns not bringing him in on a one-year deal to prove his worth. At 30 years old, Breaston should have plenty of gas left in his tank.
