49ers will explore ‘all options’ with Alex Smith, GM says

San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke said the 49ers are exploring all options when it comes to Alex Smith and that a trade is an option, but not a certainty.

Anything is possible when it comes to the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Alex Smith. 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said all options are possible with Smith and indicated that a trade was not a definite. Baalke met with Smith after the Super Bowl and discussed their situation.

Niners Nation: Could Smith talks heat up at Combine? | Trade possibilities

While most expect the 49ers to try to trade Smith, who became their backup quarterback with the rise of Colin Kaepernick, or release him, those are not the only options. Smith is due $8.5 million in 2013, a hefty salary for a backup, but it is possible that San Francisco could have the cap space to retain Smith as an insurance policy.

There is no guarantee that the Niners will trade Smith, but it seems certain they will at least shop him around and see what they could get in return for their former starter. In 2012, Smith completed 70.2 percent of his passes and threw 13 touchdowns to only five interceptions, posting a 104.1 rating for the season. With a relatively unheralded rookie quarterback class and few options in free agency, the 49ers should be able to find a few takers for Smith this offseason.
