Bears offseason: Marc Trestman still evaluating Brian Urlacher

New Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman said linebacker Brian Urlacher is still being evaluated when addressing the media at the NFL Scouting Combine.

USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears and new head coach Marc Trestman have still not made any decisions regarding linebacker Briant Urlacher, who is set to become a free agent on March 12.

Trestman, who was the first coach to address the media at the NFL Scouting Combine said of the evaluation of Urlacher, “that’s an ongoing process.” Trestman would not go any further into where Urlacher stands in the eyes of the Bears coaches and front office. “We continue to talk about these things and process the information. But at this time we’re not going to go any further than that in our discussions.”

Urlacher has been the Bears middle linebacker and face of the organization for 13 seasons, but he is 35 years old and his skills have begun to slip. Still, he is an effective player who totaled 68 tackles, seven passes defended, two forced fumbles, and one interception returned for a touchdown over 12 games in the 2012 season.

In addition to addressing the Urlacher situation, Trestman said that the Bears plan to hire a new wide receivers coach within “the next few days.” Once a receivers coach is hired, the Chicago coaching staff will be complete.

Trestman also expressed his excitement over the opportunity to work with Jay Cutler, saying "[I'm] excited to work with him in all facets of his game." Trestman said he had not talked to Cutler or anyone in the Bears organization about a contract extension for the quarterback who is set to become a free agent after the 2013 season.
