Seahawks open to trading Matt Flynn, GM says

Seattle’s back-up could be shipped away this offseason after being signed to a big contract last offseason.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

When Matt Flynn was signed by the Seattle Seahawks during the last offseason, he was expected to be the Seahawks starting quarterback for the 2012 campaign. But a third round draft pick out of Wisconsin, Russell Wilson, passed Flynn on the depth chart and never looked back, quickly becoming one of the league's best young quarterbacks.

Field Gulls: What do the Combine tests mean to the Seahawks?

Flynn is costing the Seahawks an awful lot of cash just to sit on the bench and general manager John Schneider told reporters at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis the team would listen to offers for the back-up.

“It’s so early, everybody is in the middle of the draft process,” Schneider said. “So it’s not like I’ve had a chance to sit down with other general managers and some of the people I know around the league to talk about what their situation is. As you guys well know, we’re always going to listen to everything and if we’re not doing that, we think we’re not doing our job. That doesn’t necessarily mean we will do something with Matt.”

On Wednesday, Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman got in a public spat with Jets cornerback Darelle Revis on Twitter over who was better at the position. Although it's not an activity Schneider endorses, getting into Twitter fights, he knows that's who Sherman is.

“We know Richard, and to us, it’s not a really big deal,” said Schneider, who drafted Sherman in the fifth round of the 2011 draft. “It’s what makes him who he is. It’s one of the things that made us fall in love with him, and it gives him the confidence to play the way he plays. He feels that he’s the best cornerback in the league, and God bless him.”
