Nnamdi Asomugha rumors: Eagles unlikely to keep cornerback, per report

The future looks bleak for Nnamdi Asomugha’s tenure with the Eagles. Here’s the latest on the cornerback’s situation in Philadelphia.

Nnamdi Asomugha is set to make $15 million for the 2013 season. Unfortunately for him, the Philadelphia Eagles don't seem to be too interested in paying him that salary anymore.

Chip Kelly spoke about the 31-year-old cornerback during his news conference at the 2013 NFL Combine on Thursday, and judging by his reaction, it looks like Asomugha may be on his way out soon.

“I think Nnamdi has the skill set (pause) that can play football,” Kelly said after reportedly avoiding questions about Asomugha’s current status with the team. Instead of praising his play, Kelly simply downplayed the whole scenario. Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com seems to believe Asomugha is “all but done” in Philly.

The 2012 season was not an impressive campaign for Asomugha, or the Eagles in general. Unless the two sides can reach a major restructuring settlement, parting ways with the veteran corner will likely be the course of action. Asomugha would then fall into a relatively deep pool of free agents at his position, with plenty of talent left to bring to another franchise. He won’t stay unemployed for long.
