Franchise tag unlikely for Seahawks

It looks like the Seattle Seahawks won’t be using their franchise tag in 2013. Why not?

Steven Bisig-US PRESSWIRE

The Seattle Seahawks have 13 players on their roster ready to hit hit free agency when March 12 rolls around, and it doesn't look like the team will place a franchise tag on any of those names. Teams must use a franchise tag by March 4 or go without using one for the upcoming season. Expect the Seahawks to be in that boat.

Only two starters from offense and defense will be eligible to test the open market next month. Defensive tackle Alan Branch would cost $8 million for a franchise tag, and his play isn't quite to the level of earning that type of money. Linebacker Leroy Hill was recently arrested for domestic violence. Seattle doesn't appear to be set on bringing him back.

General manager John Schneider says the Seahawks are still evaluating the situation, but it’s unlikely they will use a franchise tag.

As Pro Football Talk noted, Steven Hauschka may be the most worthy candidate on the roster for a tag. He converted on 24 of 27 field goals in 2012, and would only cost Seattle $2.9 million. Still, the Seahawks likely won't bother this offseason.
