Willis McGahee injury update: Broncos still evaluating RB’s knee recovery

The Broncos are still in a wait-and-see approach on Willis McGahee’s recovery from a knee injury.

Willis McGahee is 31 years old and finished the 2012 season on Injured Reserve after injuring his knee in November, raising questions about his career and in particular his future with the Denver Broncos.

Broncos vice president of player personnel John Elway did his part to quell speculation that Denver might cut McGahee, telling reporters at the Combine that the running back will be back in Denver next season, but he did hedge that claim by implying they were in a wait-and-see approach with McGahee’s knee. It was hardly a resounding show of support for McGahee.

“Willis is under contract, so we’re thrilled that he’ll be back,” Elway said at the Combine. “We’ll see how he comes off that knee. He’s been a tremendous asset for us the last two years that he’s been there. We’re still going through that evaluation process and we’ll see how he comes off the knee.”

McGahee is still under contract for two more years and and is due just $2.5 million in 2013. He was the team’s leading rusher when he got hurt after averaging 4.4 yards per carry, but he was also tied for the league lead in fumbles lost when he went down.
