Rams won’t use franchise tag, GM Les Snead says

St. Louis Rams general manager Les Snead says the team will not use the franchise tag, which means wide receiver Danny Amendola will become an unrestricted free agent if the two sides don’t agree to a long-term deal.

The St. Louis Rams will not use the franchise tag this year according to general manager Les Snead, who told NFL.com on Friday that the team would not use the tag on any players, including wide receiver Danny Amendola. Amendola was the most likely Ram to receive the tag, but with a franchise number of over $10 million for wide receivers and Amendola's injury history it did not make sense given the cap situation in St. Louis.

The Rams still hope to sign Amendola to a long-term deal, but if he is not signed by March 12 he will become an unrestricted free agent and be able to test the market. St. Louis is particularly thin at wide receiver with only three currently signed through the 2013 season and could greatly use Amendola, but the sides are reported to be far apart.

Last season Amendola was limited to just 11 games due to injuries, but led the Rams with 63 receptions, gaining 666 yards and scoring three touchdowns. He also served as their most effect punt returner when healthy. Amendola could still end up returning to St. Louis after he sees what other teams have to offer.
