The San Diego Chargers are currently under the salary cap, but they could certainly use wiggle room as new general manager Tom Telesco begins to rebuild a team that finished with the second-worst offense in the NFL in 2012.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Chargers are about $7 million under the salary cap, but Telesco told him on Friday that they could restructure current deals on the team to free up more space:
“Some things we’ll probably have to look at, as far as where we are,” Telesco said this week at the NFL Combine. “Sometimes it makes sense and sometimes it doesn’t ... You always know which ones could be reworked. I don’t know if we’ll have to go down that route or not. Probably not. We’re still early in that process ... I think we’ll open up the next year, but we don’t have a lot of room this year. But we’ll make do.”
If the Chargers are to redo any contracts, the one that would make the most sense for the franchise is the contract belonging to Philip Rivers. He signed a seven-year, $98.25 deal in 2009 and will count $17.11 million against the team's cap in 2013, according to SportRac. Only eight players have a higher cap number for the 2013 season.
Safety Eric Weddle has the second highest cap hit on the team at $8.6 million after signing a five-year, $40 million deal prior to the 2011 season.
