Nick Foles trade rumors: Chiefs, Eagles have discussed deal, according to report

The Chiefs, lacking an answer at quarterback, have discussed trying to trade for Eagles backup Nick Foles, according to a report. But the Eagles may not be so willing to bite.

Nick Foles has been the center of trade discussions between the Philadelphia Eagles and a team with a big need at quarterback, the Kansas City Chiefs, according to USA Today. The Chiefs approached the Eagles during Combine week, according to the USA Today report, but were told what the Eagles have said publicly: Foles is not available. The Eagles re-signed Michael Vick this offseason, which has ratcheted up the Foles trade rumors.

Earlier in the week, Chiefs coach Andy Reid was asked about Foles’ availability but noted that he is currently unavailable as the property of the Eagles. Garafolo wrote that Foles is likely not on the market, regardless of the discussion.

The Eagles reiterated what Reid already knew - Foles is not on the market at this point.

There’s always a chance things could change in the next few weeks or months. In fact, there’s no urgency at this point because, while teams are free to discuss potential trades right now, no deals can occur before the start of the league year on March 12. For now, talks between the Eagles and Chiefs are going nowhere on the Foles front.

Trades can’t be consummated until the start of the new league year on March 12. The Chiefs have also been connected to Alex Smith through various trade rumors so it’s becoming clear the Chiefs would like to add a quarterback who can start right away, rather than pin all their hopes on a first or second round draft pick.

In five games last year, Foles threw for 1,699 yards and six touchdowns, with a completion percentage of 60.8 and a 79.1 quarterback rating. The Chiefs have Matt Cassel under contract and hold the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. It seems unlikely at this point the Chiefs would use that No. 1 pick on a quarterback, perhaps instead eyeing offensive lineman Luke Joeckel.
