NFL free agency 2013: Mike Wallace to Dolphins rumor gaining steam

The Miami Dolphins, hoping to add more playmakers this offseason, have set their sights on wide receiver Mike Wallace and are reportedly ready to offer the former Pittsburgh star big bucks to come to South Beach.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Reports earlier this week indicated wide receiver Mike Wallace would be a top priority for the Miami Dolphins this offseason, with the latest weekend Combine scuttlebutt reinforcing this belief. Via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com:

Expect a major push for an offensive skill player. In talking with general manager Jeff Ireland, he focused on landing a player who can produce explosive plays. That would seem to indicate their eyes will turn to receiver Mike Wallace.

The Dolphins and head coach Joe Philbin have made adding offensive weapons a top priority this offseason, with Wallace arguably the best free agent wide receiver available to assist second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill in Miami.

Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel has reported Miami is willing to make Wallace one of the league’s highest-paid wideouts, somewhere in the range of $60 million overall and $12 million per season. Still just 26-years-old, Wallace has caught 235 passes for 4,042 yards and 32 touchdowns since entering the league in 2009. Over is career, he has averaged 17.2 yards per reception. Wallace is coming off a disappointing 2012 campaign, however, catching just 64 passes for 834 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games.
