Dashon Goldson unlikely to receive franchise tag from 49ers

San Francisco doesn’t look like it will use a franchise tag on Dashon Goldson for the second straight year. Will the 28-year-old safety remain with the 49ers for 2013?

The San Francisco 49ers are not expected to use a franchise tag on safety Dashon Goldson, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. Goldson played under a tag in 2012, but he is unlikely to receive one again heading into next season.

Placing a tag on Goldson would cost the 49ers $7.45 million for 2013. Reports also indicate the two sides are not close to reaching a long-term deal at this point. If Goldson doesn’t get a new contract within the next couple weeks, he will be heading for free agency on March 12.

Goldson expressed interest in a long-term contract after losing to the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl, noting his desire to attain some security in his position. Head coach Jim Harbaugh also believes Goldson deserves a multi-year deal.

“He’s somebody that I think that you reward,” Harbaugh said. “Plays every game. Can find the ball. You know that he’s out there. And opposing offenses know that he’s out there. And he tackles and does everything that you’d want a safety to do. And, yeah, I feel like you reward those type of people. Who do you reward if you don’t reward those type of people?”

After being named to the Pro Bowl in 2011 and 2012, Goldson will draw plenty of interest on the open market if the 49ers don’t retain him.
