Dallas Cowboys face cap decision with Doug Free

The Cowboys could cut offensive lineman Doug Free to save cap space, or they may consider moving him from tackle to guard.

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

The Dallas Cowboys are over the salary cap and offensive lineman Doug Free could become a cap casualty in the near future. Free struggled this past season at right tackle and is due $7 million in 2013 if he remains on the roster.

If he returns to the team, it is possible it won’t be as the starting right tackle as Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones has said that Dallas is also considering moving Free to the guard position. “We’re looking at it. We’re going to un-turn every stone to get better. But I wouldn’t rule him out of tackle either,” Jones said.

Free, a Cowboys fourth round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft, became the starting left tackle in Dallas in 2010 and switched over the right tackle position in 2012, swapping spots with Tyron Smith. Free struggled throughout 2012, leading the NFL in penalties with eight false starts and seven holding penalties. His struggles moved Free into a rotation at the position with Jermey Parnell, but Free played some of his best football at the end of the season.

Despite the Cowboys cap issues, it is possible they could part with Free and bring in a free agent tackle. There are several offensive tackles on the market and the Cowboys are no strangers to signing big names and spending big money. If they decide they want someone, they’ll find a way to make a run at him.
