A.J. Smith will reportedly join Washington Redskins as consultant

Former San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith is expected to join the Redskins personnel department.

Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

Former San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith has reportedly landed a new job with the Washington Redskins according to Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego. Acee reports that Smith will become a consultant in the Redskins personnel department, joining his son, Kyle, who is currently a scout for the Redskins.

Smith was in Indianapolis during the NFL Scouting Combine to meet with the Patriots, Chiefs, and Redskins about joining their personnel departments and is believed to have landed in Washington. He was fired by the Chargers at the end of the 2012 season after 10 years as the general manager in San Diego. The Chargers finished the season 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the third straight year, but prior to their recent drought, San Diego made the playoffs in five out of six seasons.

At one point Smith was interested in the general manager position with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but that job went to David Caldwell. Smith had been offered at least three additional jobs on top of the interest from the Pats, Chiefs, and Redskins.
