Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers adjust contract to avoid salary cap issues

Ben Roethlisberger is renegotiating his contract in order to help the Steelers get under the salary cap.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers face one of the toughest salary cap situations of any team this offseason and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is trying to help them get to a manageable figure. Roethlisberger is renegotiating his current deal, which carries a cap figure of $19.595 million in 2013, and a new deal could be reached by the end of the week according to Albert Breer of NFL.com.

Behind the Steel Curtain: Steelers begin offseason moves

Pittsburgh currently has over $100 million committed to just 10 players for the 2013 season, with Roethlisberger carrying the fourth-highest cap number of any player in the league. It is expected that the Steelers will simply renegotiate Roethlisberger’s contract and will not offer him an extension as Big Ben still has three years left on his current deal. Last season Roethlisberger threw for 3,265 yards and 26 touchdowns in 13 games, but the Steelers finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs.

In addition to restructuring the deals of some of their high-priced players, Pittsburgh will likely have to release a few of their bigger names. Linebacker James Harrison is the most frequently mentioned when it comes to potential cap-related cuts.
