The 2013 NFL Combine is over and reflection on the numbers has begun. While players still have a chance to improve their times and numbers at their respective pro days and in private workouts, the combine is the big stage for prospective draft picks.
2013 NFL mock draft: How did the top picks perform at the Combine?
Look at the combine performances of the top prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft.
On Monday, SB Nation’s Matthew Fairburn released his latest mock draft. Take a look at the combine numbers of each of the players in the first round of his mock and an evaluation of their performance in Indianapolis.
| Pick | Player | Position | Height | Weight | Class | |||
| 1. Kansas City Chiefs | Sheldon Richardson, Missouri | DT | 6'2 1/2 | 294 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 34 1/2" | 10 1/2" | 4.97 | 1.69 | 30 | 32" | 9'8" | --- | --- |
| In the unfortunate absence of Star Lotulelei, Sheldon Richardson took advantage with a great combine performance. He showed the length and size that could make him a valuable player in both 3-4 or 4-3 systems and excelled in both strength and speed drills. After his performance, he drew the praise of NFL Network's Mike Mayock, who raved about Richardson's upside. | ![]() | |||||||
| 2. Jacksonville Jaguars | Barkevious Mingo, LSU | DE | 6'4 1/4 | 241 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 33 3/4" | 9 3/4" | 4.53 | 1.55 | --- | 37" | 10'8" | 6.84 | 4.39 |
| While Mingo didn't rack up the sacks during his junior season at LSU, he showed he has the athleticism necessary to do it in the NFL. Particularly impressive were his stellar performances in the vertical jump, three-cone drill and short shuttle that showed great lower body strength and agility. Mingo showed he has all the explosiveness necessary to be a pass rushing terror. | ![]() | |||||||
| 3. Oakland Raiders | Geno Smith, West Virginia | QB | 6'2 3/8 | 218 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 32 1/2" | 9 1/4" | 4.59 | 1.59 | --- | 33.5" | 10'4" | --- | --- |
Geno Smith first caught attention at the combine for his surprisingly quick time in the 40-yard dash. Fastest among quarterbacks, Smith also did well in the vertical jump and broad jump and showed more athleticism than he's been given credit for. However, his performance in throwing drills wasn't great. While his performance in the drills wasn't horrible, it didn't blow anyone away and solidify his place in the top five. | ![]()
| 4. Philadelphia Eagles | Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M | OT | 6'6 | 306 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 34 1/4" | 10 1/8" | 5.30 | 1.81 | 27 | 28.5" | 8'10" | 7.4 | 4.68 |
Joeckel would've had to have done pretty poorly at the combine to knock himself from elite status in the draft. He had an excellent career at Texas A&M and measured in at the combine with the size and length that everyone expected. However, he definitely didn't look elite in drills and put up pedestrian numbers for a guy that is essentially a top 10 lock. As Dan Kadar said though, it's not going to be much of a negative and it shouldn't be either. | ![]()
| 5. Detroit Lions | Ezekiel Ansah, BYU | DE | 6'5 1/4 | 271 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 35 1/8" | 10 1/4" | 4.62 | 1.56 | 21 | 34.5" | 9'10" | 7.11 | 4.26 |
Big size, long arms, quickness and speed. What more could you have asked for from Ansah who was, unsurprisingly, a force at the combine. The BYU lineman is the epitome of an upside pick and showed why, with a blend of size and athleticism, that will make him worth an early pick regardless of inexperience and technique deficiencies. | ![]()
| 6. Cleveland Browns | Dion Jordan, Oregon | LB | 6'6 1/4 | 248 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 33 7/8" | 10" | 4.53 | 1.57 | --- | 32.5" | 10'2" | 7.02 | 4.35 |
| Similar to Ansah, Dion Jordan's blend of size and athleticism was on display in Indianapolis. The only reason the combine wasn't a huge win for Jordan is that everyone already expected this from the versatile pass rusher. With a labrum surgery on the way, Jordan will probably sit on his combine numbers until draft day and he earned the luxury to do so. | ![]() | |||||||
| 7. Arizona Cardinals | Eric Fisher, Central Michigan | OT | 6'7 1/4 | 306 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 34 1/2" | 10 1/2" | 5.05 | 1.70 | 27 | 28.5" | 9'8" | 7.59 | 4.44 |
Luke Joeckel is still, by-and-large, the consensus top offensive tackle in the draft class; however, the gap between him and Eric Fisher is closing. With Joeckel's pedestrian combine numbers, Fisher closed the gap further with just a little more size and quickness. He also bested Joeckel's numbers in the broad jump by 10 inches, showing the power and balance necessary to be a starting left tackle. | ![]()
| 8. Buffalo Bills | Jarvis Jones, Georgia | OLB | 6'2 | 245 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 33" | 9 1/8" | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
Jarvis Jones elected not to workout at the combine, which although disappointing, isn't going to hurt his chances at being a high draft pick much if he's available to perform well at his pro day. The combine, though, was mostly about the medical examination for Jones and the results of that are in teams' hands behind closed doors. Jones seemed to believe that teams reacted positively to his medical tests. | ![]()
| 9. New York Jets | DaMontre Moore, Texas A&M | DE | 6'4 1/2 | 250 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 34 3/4" | 10 1/4" | 4.87 | 1.69 | 12 | 35.5" | 10'2" | --- | --- |
Perhaps the biggest loser of the weekend was Damontre Moore. With poor numbers in both the 40-yard dash and the bench press, he was extremely unimpressive. As Dan Kadar said, "Certainly during combine prep, Moore had to know he was going to get these type of numbers. Why participate? Either work more until your pro day, or just sit out work outs completely." Moore could be in for a free fall on mock drafts. | ![]()
| 10. Tennessee Titans | Sharrif Floyd, Florida | DT | 6'2 5/8 | 297 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 31 3/4" | 10 1/8" | 4.87 | 1.68 | --- | 30" | 8'10" | 7.4 | 4.75 |
| With Star Lotulelei out of action, both Richardson and Floyd had very strong showings at the combine. While Floyd was bested by Richardson in the broad jump and vertical jump, he was a little quicker in the 40-yard dash and his performance overall was called "phenomenal" by NFL Network's Mike Mayock. | ![]() | |||||||
| Team | Player | Position | Height | Weight | Stars | |||
| 11. San Diego Chargers | Lane Johnson, Oklahoma | OT | 6'6 | 303 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 35 1/4" | 10 1/8" | 4.72 | 1.61 | 28 | 34" | 9'10" | 7.31 | 4.52 |
| Johnson proved himself as a top 11 pick, according to Dan Kadar, who listed the Oklahoma left tackle with Eric Fisher as two winners of the combine. With a very a impressive 40-yard dash time for a 6'6, 303-pound tackle, Johnson closed the gap some between him and Luke Joeckel, who had a mediocre combine showing. | ![]() | |||||||
| 12. Miami Dolphins | DeAndre Hopkins, Clemson | WR | 6'1 | 214 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 33 3/8" | 10" | 4.57 | 1.59 | 15 | 36" | 9'7" | --- | 4.5 |
While Tavon Austin blew the doors off the combine, DeAndre Hopkins' showing was much less interesting. He was as big as everyone thought he would be and ran about as fast as everyone that he would. A smooth route-runner, the combine showing shouldn't hurt him much, but it didn't bolster his draft stock either. | ![]()
| 13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Dee Milliner, Alabama | CB | 5'11 7/8 | 201 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 32" | 8 3/4" | 4.31 | 1.49 | --- | 36" | 10'2" | 6.95 | 4.32 |
Dee Milliner was the talk of the combine on Tuesday after he crushed any lasting beliefs that he didn't have the straight-line speed necessary to be elite. Still two months away from draft day, there are already rumors that the Detroit Lions are smitten with the Alabama cornerback and teams that wish for his services would have to trade up into the top four to get him. | ![]()
| 14. Carolina Panthers | Star Lotulelei, Utah | DT | 6'2 1/2 | 311 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 33 5/8" | 9 3/4" | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| The combine was nothing short than devastating for the Utah defensive tackle after the medical examinations determined he should sit out from workouts due to a potential heart problem. The good news for Lotulelei is that he can quickly bounce back from the setback if he's cleared by doctors in Utah and can show his abilities at his pro day. | ![]() | |||||||
| 15. New Orleans Saints | Xavier Rhodes, Florida State | CB | 6'1 1/2 | 210 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 33 3/4" | 9" | 4.41 | 1.47 | 14 | 40.5" | 11' | --- | --- |
| If Milliner hadn't had a superb combine showing as well, there's a good chance that Xavier Rhodes could've overtaken him as the top cornerback in mock drafts. With a huge 40.5" vertical jump and an impressive 4.41 40-yard dash for a cornerback of his physicality and size, Rhodes inches his way toward being a top 10 pick. | ![]() | |||||||
| 16. St. Louis Rams | Chance Warmack, Alabama | OG | 6'2 | 317 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 34 3/4" | 9 5/8" | 5.49 | 1.83 | --- | --- | 9'2" | --- | --- |
| The combine really doesn't do a whole lot for offensive lineman, especially those along the interior. Warmack showed up in shape and that's really all that he needed to do. His 40-yard dash was among the slowest at the entire combine, but the chances he'll have to run 40 yards on a play ever are pretty slim. | ![]() | |||||||
| 17. Pittsburgh Steelers | Jesse Williams, Alabama | DT | 6'3 3/8 | 323 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 32" | 9 3/8" | --- | --- | 30 | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| The Australian-born defensive tackle was a player to watch at the combine for no other reason than his assertion that he could break the record for bench press reps. He came up well short and didn't participate in any other drills due to a knee injury. It shouldn't hurt his stock much, but it's hard to call Williams' performance anything less than disappointing. | ![]() | |||||||
| 18. Dallas Cowboys | Bjoern Werner, Florida State | DE | 6'3 1/4 | 266 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 33 1/4" | 9 5/8" | 4.79 | 1.66 | 25 | 31" | 9'3" | 7.30 | 9.40 |
| The combine wasn't a poor showing for Werner, but nothing he did is going to blow anyone away either. While ridiculous athletes like Ezekiel Ansah and Dion Jordan stole the show, Werner was about as good as everyone expected him to be. A positive is that he certainly appears to be a better prospect than Damontre Moore at this point. | ![]() | |||||||
| 19. New York Giants | Tank Carradine, Florida State | DE | 6'4 1/8 | 276 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 34 3/4" | 10 1/4" | --- | --- | 28 | --- | --- | --- | --- |
It's pretty hard to show up to the combine with a knee injury, not participate in drills, and still come away as a winner. Cornellius "Tank" Carradine did that, though, when he told reporters the progress he has made in his recovery from surgery. If he can perform at the Florida State pro day like he told reporters that he can, he'll almost certainly secure a first-round selection. | ![]()
| 20. Chicago Bears | Jonathan Cooper, North Carolina | G | 6'2 1/8 | 311 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 33" | 10 1/4" | 5.07 | 1.73 | 35 | 27" | 9' | 7.78 | 4.84 |
| As was said earlier with Chance Warmack, the combine is not a do-or-die showing for interior offensive lineman. Regardless, Cooper showed athleticism that Warmack did not and may be closer to being the top offensive guard in the class than most people realize. | ![]() | |||||||
| Team | Player | Position | Height | Weight | Stars | |||
| 21. Cincinnati Bengals | Kenny Vaccaro, Texas | S | 6'0 | 214 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 32 3/4" | 10" | 4.59 | 1.57 | 15 | 38" | 10'1" | 6.78 | 4.06 |
Kenny Vaccaro didn't set the world on fire with his 40-yard dash time, but he wasn't expected to. His great showings in the vertical jump and short shuttle show the explosiveness and quickness to make him a top safety that can get from sideline-to-sideline in a hurry, regardless of his less-than-great straight line speed. | ![]()
| 22. St. Louis Rams | Keenan Allen, California | WR | 6'2 | 206 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 32 3/4" | 10" | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
A knee injury for Allen withheld him from all drills so the combine was a wash for the California wide receiver. All he could do was show up and measure like everyone expected him to, which he did. | ![]()
| 23. Minnesota Vikings | Cordarrelle Patterson | WR | 6'1 7/8 | 216 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 31 3/4" | 9" | 4.42 | 1.55 | --- | 37" | 10'8" | --- | --- |
| Cordarrelle Patterson is a raw wide receiver with only one year of Division I collegiate experience, but he showed why he has so many intrigued with big numbers for a player that measured in at 6'2, 216 pounds. His 37" vertical jump and 10'8" broad jump show the explosive power he has to be a big-time playmaker. | ![]() | |||||||
| 24. Indianapolis Colts | D.J. Fluker, Alabama | OT | 6'4 5/8 | 339 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 36 3/4" | 10 1/2" | 5.31 | 1.83 | 21 | --- | --- | --- | --- |
D.J. Fluker was expected to be a mammoth offensive tackle and it turns out he's a mammoth offensive tackle. His 36 3/4" arms are extremely long and explain his mediocre 21 reps on the bench press. He wasn't fast in the 40-yard dash, but when is a man that is 339 pounds fast? | ![]()
| 25. Seattle Seahawks | Tavon Austin, West Virginia | WR | 5'8 1/2 | 174 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 30" | 9 1/8" | 4.34 | 1.45 | 14 | 32" | 10' | --- | 4.01 |
Tavon Austin was expected to be a combine star and he still out-shined expectations. While everyone knew about his change of direction skills and burst, his 40-yard dash was at least a 10th of a second faster than most projected and showed he has all the athleticism necessary to be a dynamic playmaker. | ![]()
| 26. Green Bay Packers | Arthur Brown, Kansas State | LB | 6' | 241 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 32 1/2" | 10" | --- | --- | --- | --- | 9'8" | --- | --- |
Limited by a shoulder injury, Arthur Brown unfortunately only participated in the broad jump drill. While he measured in at just 6 feet tall, this is nothing new and was nothing that teams didn't expect to see. The Kansas State pro day will be crucial for Brown. | ![]()
| 27. Houston Texans | Manti Te'o, Notre Dame | MLB | 6'1 1/4 | 241 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 32 1/2" | 9 1/2" | 4.80 | 1.62 | --- | 33" | 9'5" | 7.13 | 4.27 |
| Dan Kadar summarized Te'o's showing in Indianapolis well. "He was slow. He was a little undersized. The media swarmed him. I just don't care. Anyone who expected Te'o to do well in drills is foolish. He's still a late first-round or early second-round pick. The combine didn't help or hurt him." | ![]() | |||||||
| 28. Denver Broncos | Kawann Short, Purdue | DT | 6'2 7/8 | 299 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 34 3/4" | 9 3/4" | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
Kawann Short didn't participate in drills at the combine due to a hamstring injury, but showed up in shape and told reporters that he weighed less than 300 pounds for the first time since middle school. A quick defensive tackle, his ability to drop weight is a plus for Short, but ultimately he'll have to show his athleticism at the Purdue pro day to warrant a first-round draft pick. | ![]()
| 29. New England Patriots | Logan Ryan, Rutgers | CB | 5'11 1/8 | 191 | Jr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 31 3/8" | 9 5/8" | 4.50 | 1.50 | 14 | 32.5" | 9'8" | 6.69 | 4.06 |
Logan Ryan didn't have a great combine showing, but it was decidedly better than Johnthan Banks'. Ryan didn't show elite 40-yard dash speed, but he showed enough to prove he can play on the boundaries and was very speedy in the three-cone drill and short shuttle. | ![]()
| 30. Atlanta Falcons | Giovani Bernard, North Carolina | RB | 5'8 3/8 | 202 | So. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 28" | 9 3/8" | 4.53 | 1.53 | 19 | 33.5" | 10'2" | 6.91 | 4.12 |
Giovani Bernard wasn't unimpressive at the combine, but he wasn't particularly impressive either. In a class of running backs that doesn't have a premiere No. 1 back, Bernard did enough to hold off the rest of the field, but not enough to separate himself much. | ![]()
| 31. San Francisco 49ers | Jonathan Cyprien, Florida International | S | 6'0 1/4 | 217 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 31 3/4" | 10 1/4" | --- | --- | --- | 38.5" | --- | --- | --- |
Jonathan Cyprien was pegged by many as a player that could shine at the combine and come away as a for-sure first-round pick. It started off with what a huge 38.5" vertical jump, but that was the end of his day, after he withdrew from the remaining drills with a hamstring strain. He'll have the chance to rectify the situation at the Florida International pro day. | ![]()
| 32. Baltimore Ravens | Menelik Watson, Florida State | OT | 6'5 1/8 | 310 | Sr. | |||
| Arm Length | Hand Size | 40-Yard Dash | 10-Yard | Bench Press | Vertical Jump | Broad Jump | 3-Cone | Short Shuttle |
| 34" | 10 3/8" | 5.29 | 1.80 | --- | 24.5" | 8'7" | 8.31 | 5.01 |
Lauded as a tremendously athletic player that is raw, he looked like an average athletic player that is raw. While he looked the part of an NFL offensive tackle at 6'5, 310 pounds, nothing about his times in drills are eye-popping. The lack of big numbers for Watson makes his raw technique less appealing to work with. | ![]()
Special thanks to Bud Elliott of SB Nation recruiting and Tomahawk Nation for the mock draft layout.
