How did the top picks perform at the Combine?

    USA TODAY Sports

The 2013 NFL Combine is over and reflection on the numbers has begun. While players still have a chance to improve their times and numbers at their respective pro days and in private workouts, the combine is the big stage for prospective draft picks.

On Monday, SB Nation’s Matthew Fairburn released his latest mock draft. Take a look at the combine numbers of each of the players in the first round of his mock and an evaluation of their performance in Indianapolis.

    Safety combine results

    USA TODAY Sports

Thomas ran the fastest 40-yard dash of all the safeties at 4.42 seconds, despite falling over at the finish line, had the most reps at the bench press, tied for the highest vertical jump and was one inch off the longest broad jump. Still, Thomas is not considered one of the top safety prospects, but these numbers should do wonders for his draft stock.

Complete official results for all of safety prospects can be found below:

    Push It: Bench press edition

    USA TODAY Sports

There’s nothing particularly interesting about the bench press at the NFL Combine. The 40-yard dash is the main event of the Combine, and the bench press is more of a sideshow done in a back room away from the field. But that doesn’t mean we can’t make the bench a little bit fun.

Behold, the SB Nation workout video. A montage of bench press clips by itself isn’t appointment viewing, but setting it to Push It makes everything that much better.

Combine notes from a college football fan

    USA TODAY Sports

The draft is an odd time for a college football fan. Your previous estimates of players are wiped clean by pro scouts, who reduce bodies of work to a cold slate of numbers, isolated game footage, and leaked rumors about bad attitude and positive drug tests.

Scouts have to do this, or at least the measuring and film work because without measurements you’re simply guessing instead of guessing with hints of empirical support. They also don’t have the luxury college football fans have -- i.e., the freedom to leisurely watch players work in context, and not just in cutups and combine drills.

Trufant is considered a true cover corner by experts. His 6’0, 190-pound frame is good for the position, though he will need to prove he is strong enough to press receivers at the line of scrimmage.

    Damontre Moore ‘disappointed’ by performance

    USA TODAY Sports

The poor showing in the bench press drew the ire of NFL Network’s Mike Mayock:

Compounding the poor show of strength, Moore struggled in the 40-yard dash as well, finishing in an underwhelming 4.87 seconds, although a hamstring injury is said to have slowed him a bit.

Mathieu runs unofficial 4.43 in 40-yard dash

    NFL Network

Mathieu raised eyebrows when he finished with just four reps of 225 pounds in the bench press drill; however, his physicality as a football player wasn’t very much in question. His size and straight-line speed were, though, and the fast sprint time certainly helps to combat the latter.

The time is even more impressive considering Mathieu weighed in at 186 pounds, 10 pounds heavier than his listed playing weight of 176 during his time at LSU. While still limited due to his height, the 40-yard dash alone is enough to make the trip to the 2013 NFL Combine a solid one for the former Heisman candidate.

Defensive backs work out on NFL Combine’s last day

    Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Defensive backs will continue to be a premium in the aerially focused offensive world of the NFL, and the position’s group takes the field on the last day of NFL Combine workouts by themselves, in full focus for scouts and teams.

Let’s take a look at five defensive backs to watch at the Combine, in no particular order:

    Combine Day 3 wrap

    Joe Robbins

The first few days of the NFL Scouting Combine draw the most attention; but although there may have been fewer media members in Indianapolis on Monday, there was still plenty of action and talent on the field. The defensive linemen and linebackers worked out on Monday, which meant several potential first-round picks were on the field.

While Mingo and Jordan impressed, Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore struggled on Monday. Moore arrived at the combine as a potential top-10 pick, but may now see his stock drop. He ran a 4.95 second 40-yard dash, among the slower results for defensive ends. Strength proved to be an even bigger issue as Moore completed just 12 reps on the bench press, the fewest of any player participating on Monday. To make matters worse, Moore pulled up short in his second 40-yard dash.

    Running back combine results

    Joe Robbins

Unlike previous seasons, the 2013 NFL Draft isn’t loaded with elite running back prospects, but several players boosted their draft stock during the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. As is usually the case with running back workouts, there was plenty of athleticism on display in Indianapolis.

The 40-yard dash draws the most attention and Onterio McCalebb led the way for running backs. McCalebb posted a 4.34 40 time, 0.03 ahead of Knile Davis who finished second at 4.37. Kerwynn Williams at 4.48 and Johnathan Franklin at 4.49 were the only other players to run faster than 4.5.

    Wide receiver combine results

    USA TODAY Sports

Every year, wide receivers prove to be among the best athletes at the NFL Scouting Combine and 2013 was no different.

From fast 40-yard dash times to impressive vertical and broad jumps, wide receiver prospects showed off their athleticism in Indianapolis. It wasn’t all positive, however, as some prospects posted disappointing numbers and may have hurt their draft stock.

A.J. Klein injures knee at Combine

    USA TODAY Sports

Pro Football Talk initially reported that Klein had a “serious knee injury”, but the former Cyclone went on the record and tweeted that it’s not that serious, and he expects to be ready for Iowa State’s Pro Day on March 26.

Later, Klein’s agent Scott Smith also refuted the PFT report:

Jamie Collins lights up the Combine

The 6’3, 250 pound defender started out the day running a 4.64 in the 40 yard dash, one of the fastest times out of all linebackers. He followed that up with an 11’7 broad jump, leading all linebackers. Finally, he blew away the field with an incredible 41.5 inch vertical leap, making most NBA players blush. He came just one inch away from breaking Roger McIntosh’s record of 42.5.

Collins has more than proved his athletic ability, and it’s a safe bet that more scouts will be demanding some Southern Miss tape after Monday’s perforamnce.

    The sounds of the Combine

    Joe Robbins

Watching tomorrow’s NFL stars exercise at the annual Scouting Combine in Indianapolis is more entertaining than you think. Sure, you’ve got all the triumph and tragedy as players win or lose millions based on how fast they can run 40 yards, but the sophomoric soundtrack of men exercising is a treat for the inner child in all of us.

Grunting, moaning, panting, exhaling with a squeak ... players make ever kind of noise for whatever your preferred innuedo is.

    Gooden impresses with 40 time

    Dak Dillon-US PRESSWIRE

Linebacker Zaviar Gooden continued to have an impressive NFL Combine Monday, as he recorded a 40-yard dash time of 4.47 seconds. That’s faster than his unofficial time and makes him the fastest linebacker at the Combine.

While Gooden’s size -- 6-foot-1, 234 pounds -- isn’t great, he has made up for it with other attributes. His reach is 32 1/4 inches, impressive for his overall size, and in addition to a blazing 40, he completed 27 reps on the bench press, which is tied for fourth-best among linebackers.

Les Miles would best Nick Saban at the Combine

    Kevin C. Cox

The scouting reports on LSU defensive end Lavar Edwards talk about a big strong guy who isn’t going to be the fastest lineman on the field, but has the high motor that teams will like. He is, in many ways, exactly like his former head coach, Les Miles.

Edwards gave us the scouting report on the Tigers head coach on Saturday at the Combine when asked if Miles or Alabama coach Nick Saban would have the better Combine performance.

Cornelius Washington has strong combine outing

    Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

The 2013 NFL Scouting Combine continued on Monday, with on-the-field workouts and drills for defensive linemen and linebackers. There’s some incredibly impressive players out there, primarily from the top-end of the draft, but there’s also the good amount of players from the later rounds who are trying to boost their stock.

Washington has an official 40-yard dash time of 4.55 seconds, which is among the highest of his position group. Plenty of players still have yet to have their times go official, but Washington should still finish relatively high. As a pass rusher, this can only help his stock.

    Te’o runs slower-than-expected 40

    Jonathan Daniel

Trying to impress NFL scouts and personnel in the wake of a personal scandal, linebacker Manti Te’o ran an unofficial 4.81 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine Monday. Unfortunately for Te’o, that was slower than expected.

Te’o interviewed with NFL personnel over the weekend, and by all accounts, he gave a solid first impression. But with a slow 40 time, his draft stock, which was already up in the air due to his fake girlfriend hoax scandal, may take a hit. Te’o could fall behind other linebackers in the draft class, according to NFL.com’s Chris Wesseling:

    John Harbaugh is unimpressed

Manti Te’o ran a 4.80 40-yard dash, unofficially, which really isn’t that good. It’s only part of the draft stock puzzle, sure, but Te’o’s 40 has been a story throughout the morning. And when it came time to show what he can do, he just didn’t do all too well.

This GIF of John Harbaugh, split-screened with Te’o’s 40, tells the whole story.

    Mingo impresses at Combine

    Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

Mingo has been considered a top 10 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft by most prognosticators around the Internet. On Monday, he may have solidified that standing with strong numbers in the drills.

It was likely that Mingo was going to be a top 10 pick before this performance, and this can only help his case.
