According to team insider Manish Mehta, the New York Jets would like to re-sign safety LaRon Landry, who is set to be a free agent in 2013.

The Jets have been cleaning house since new general manager John Idzik arrived from Seattle. He has thoroughly evaluated this roster, having cut ties with Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Eric Smith and Jason Smith. Idzik is also reportedly seeking trade partners willing to deal for All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis.

So, this news comes with some significance.

The Jets have been trying to remodel this team entirely and they feel that Landry fits the mold they’re looking for. He is a tough banger on the back end, as one of the most notoriously hard-hitting defensive backs in the NFL. He has not been praised for his coverage skills, but Landry does fill a need.

Under Rex Ryan, the Jets would like to reestablish a tough persona, and Landry could be an integral part of that. However, Landry is coming off a Pro Bowl year and may try to test his value on the open market. If he decides to do this -- driving up the asking price -- the financially plagued Jets may have to back out.

But for now, look for them to press LaRon Landry for a deal before the free agent period begins.
