NFL news roundup: Alex Smith, John Harbaugh, contracts, arrests and more

The NFL Combine in Indianapolis has officially come to an end as players from all across the country have either improved, or hurt, their draft stock. Pro Days are set to begin soon, but before they do, the NFL is in somewhat of a dead zone in which not a lot happens. However, since the NFL doesn't sleep, ever, there's always news. Here's some of today's biggest news, the biggest of which, of course, being Alex Smith's trade to the Kansas City Chiefs.

We knew that Smith was reportedly being traded a couple of days ago, but we didn't know to who until today. In the morning, the news broke that Smith was being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a second-round pick in 2013 and a conditional third-round pick in 2014 that can become a second-round pick if the Chiefs win a certain number of games in the upcoming season. Smith, who led the Niners to the NFC Championship Game in 2011, was benched after he came back from a concussion in favor of Colin Kaepernick.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver and return specialist Joshua Cribbs said in a recent interview that his contract negotiations with the team are at a "standstill." Cribbs hasn't been a huge threat as a receiver for the Browns, but he has returned 11 kicks and punts for touchdowns in his eight years with the team. Cribbs stated his desire to retire as a Brown, but said he was unsure of upper management's feelings on re-signing him.

On the other side of the AFC North, the Pittsburgh Steelers were able to restructure the contract of wide receiver Antonio Brown, which helped the team get under the 2013 salary cap. According to the report, Browns contract went from $4.5 million to $650,000, with the remaining money going towards a signing bonus. Brown has racked up 2,062 yards and seven touchdowns in his three seasons with the Steelers.

You can't go very long without reading about a player getting themselves in legal trouble and, on Wednesday, that player was Bears tackle J'Marcus Webb. According to the report, Webb was arrested and detained on Sunday on charges of possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He posted bond and was released, and his court date will come in March.

The New York Jets are hoping to re-sign safety LaRon Landry, who is set become an unrestricted free agent in March. The Jets have been cleaning house, getting rid of veteran players left and right in order to get back under the cap. The news that they want to keep Landry around is pretty big. However, Landry is coming off a Pro Bowl season, and if he tests the market, he may be too expensive for the Jets, who are short on funds.

While Alex Smith is packing his bags for Kansas City, many question what will happen to current quarterback Matt Cassel. The Chiefs won't be able to keep both Smith and Cassel on the team at the same time and, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter, one potential landing spot for Cassel is the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals struggled, starting four different quarterbacks in 2012, and finished the season with a 5-11 record.

The New York Giants were able to keep their key free agent on Wednesday when it was announced that they re-signed Will Beaty to a five-year deal. Beaty, the team's best offensive tackle, signed the deal worth $38.75 million, which is a steep price to pay, but a number can't be placed on the protection of the team's starting quarterback, Eli Manning.

After winning Super Bowl XLVII, John Harbaugh has been inducted into Miami University's (Ohio) Cradle of Coaches association. He will join other coaches with ties to the MAC school, including Paul Brown, Bo Schemblechler, Weeb Ewbank, Ara Parseghian, Earl Blaik, Carm Cozza and Paul Dietzel, and a bronze statue will be erected of the latest Super Bowl winning coach and placed on the outside of the school's football stadium.
