The Saints are in a difficult situation with the cap and needed to clear up space. Fortunately, one of their best offensive players was willing to redo his deal for the betterment of the team. According to Pro Football Talk, the new deal saves the Saints roughly $2.1 million in cap space.

Moreover, the Saints have asked Jonathan Vilma and Will Smith to restructure their deals as well. If and when Vilma and Smith comply is yet to be determined.

Given that the team hired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, and plan to install the 3-4 defense, one could assume Vilma and Smith are expendable if they refuse to restructure. Smith may be especially expendable, as he will be asked to stand up and play rush linebacker after being a down lineman for the duration of his career.

But since the Saints do not have a whole lot of flexibility, and considering they are trying to move forward, they may have to get rid of Smith. Their financial status may cause them to make decisions they might not want to.
