Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers agree to restructured contract, according to report

In a move to help the Pittsburgh Steelers get some more salary cap relief, Ben Roethlisberger has agreed to a restructured contract

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to restructure contracts in their mad dash to get under the salary cap with Ben Roethlisberger the latest to agree to a new deal, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Roethlisberger is the third Steeler to restructure his contract this offseason, following linebacker Lawrence Timmons and wide receiver Antonio Brown.

Roethlisberger was scheduled to carry a $19.595 million cap hit in 2013, but his new deal will free up $6 million in cap space according to Ed Bouchette. Roethlisberger has three years left on his contract and it is expected he could sign an extension with the Steelers next offseason to further rework his numbers.

The Steelers saved approximately $3 million on Brown's new contract and $5.3 million on Timmons; with Big Ben's new deal they have now saved over $14 million and should be under the expected salary cap. Pittsburgh was also working with LaMarr Woodley to restructure his deal, which would give the Steelers some room to work with in free agency. Still, if the Steelers want to be active in free agency, don't be surprised to see even more contracts reworked or some players outright released.
