Super Bowl 2013: 49ers fans heartbroken after loss

The San Francisco 49ers came within just a few yards of winning their sixth Super Bowl in franchise history. The loss was a tough pill to swallow for Niners Nation.

On fourth-and-goal from the Ravens 5-yard line, Colin Kaepernick dropped back to pass looking to finally put the San Francisco 49ers up on the Baltimore Ravens late in Super Bowl XLVII. As the defense broke into the backfield and forced a hurried throw from the young quarterback, the ball sailed out of bounds, and the 49ers were vanquished.

That's how close they came. Just five yards away from potentially taking a lead with just under two minutes to play at the Superdome. Jimmy Smith and Michael Crabtree were tangled up on the last throw by Kaepernick, and whether you believe it was pass interference or not, the highlight of that play will surely play over and over throughout the coming weeks.

A win would have brought home a sixth Lombardi Trophy to San Francisco. The 49ers were 5-0 in Super Bowl play prior to 2013. Now all that remains is the heartbreak left from the Ravens emerging victorious.

David Fucillo of Niners Nation was at the game in New Orleans for his first Super Bowl. Unfortunately he was forced to watch the purple confetti rain down as the clock struck 0:00.

Words cannot begin to describe how much this sucks. We thought losing to the Giants in last year's NFC Championship Game sucked, and yet this is so much worse. The 49ers played some atrocious football at times, and yet they still had a chance to win this thing late. It was a wildly entertaining game, but that is little comfort after a season that had them on the verge of Lombardi No. 6.

There isn’t much you can do or say to help the grieving process from a loss of this magnitude. At least Niners fans can take solace in the fact that this team has a dynamic young quarterback and plenty of talent surrounding him for the future.
