Michael Vick to remain with Eagles for now, according to report

The Philadelphia Eagles will not cut quarterback Michael Vick this week, despite a portion of Vick’s contract becoming guaranteed this week.

Michael Vick's future with the Philadelphia Eagles is uncertain, but don't expect any answers coming this week. Vick will remain on the Eagles roster past a Feb. 6 deadline, at which point $3 million of his contract will become guaranteed, according to Tim McManus of Philly Mag.

Vick’s guaranteed $3 million is not the important deadline it was originally made out to be, giving the Eagles leeway to hold onto the quarterback and not rush into a decision. Due to a contract provision, the Eagles would only have to pay Vick $3 million if they cut him after Feb. 6 and another team did not sign him for at least that amount, which seems highly unlikely.

This report from McManus comes on the same day as conflicting reports that the Eagles are trying to renegotiate a new deal with Vick and that they are going to release him later this week.

New Eagles coach Chip Kelly has not made any definitive comments on the Eagles' quarterback situation, saying that he is still in the evaluation process. Vick started the Eagles' first nine games last season before suffering a concussion that knocked him out several weeks. Only a late-season injury to rookie Nick Foles caused Vick to return to the field. He finished the season with 2,362 yards passing, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with a 78.1 rating; Vick also ran 62 times for 332 yards.
