Detroit Lions release DE Kyle Vanden Bosch

The Detroit Lions released one of their team leaders on Tuesday, defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch.

USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions parted ways with defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch on Tuesday, the third player they've cut this offseason. Vanden Bosch spent the last three seasons in Detroit, where he was one of their leaders on the defensive side of the ball.

The move will save the Lions approximately $5 million in cap room next season, and they are in desperate need of more cap space heading into the 2013 season. Vanden Bosch's release follows the release of wide receiver Titus Young and guard Stephen Peterman as the Lions attempt to free up cap space to add new talent in the offseason. The Lions are also expected to rework Matthew Stafford's contract this offseason in an attempt to open up more space.

Vanden Bosch’s play regressed last season, and at age 34, he was not worth the large salary he was owed next year. In 2012 Vanden Bosch recorded only 3.5 sacks, but he is credited as one of the big reasons for the Lions’ turnaround and playoff run in 2011.

With the Lions unlikely to re-sign free agent Cliff Avril, they now are extremely thin at defensive end.
