Michael Boley released by Giants, according to report

According to a report, the New York Giants released linebacker Michael Boley on Tuesday, after Boley spent four years with the Giants.

New York Giants linebacker Michael Boley might be looking for a new city to call home. According to reports, the Giants have released Boley, who was set to earn over $4 million in 2013. Earlier this week Ed Valentine of SB Nation's Big Blue View called a Boley a candidate to get cut.

Boley was benched by Giants head coach Tom Coughlin for New York’s final three games last year, and had limited playing time off the bench each week. Despite the benching, Boley appeared in 16 games for the Giants, recording 92 tackles, intercepting three passes and forcing two fumbles.

Now an eight-year veteran, Boley will turn 31 years old in August, and might not be handed a starting job with whoever he signs with. Boley began his career with the Atlanta Falcons, and spent four seasons with Atlanta between 2005-08. Boley signed with the Giants in 2009, and was a member of New York's Super Bowl XLVI championship team.

Coughlin and the Giants could very well attempt to get younger and quicker at the linebacker position this offseason -- and releasing Boley would be the first step of such a plan.
