Bruce Arians rounds out Cardinals coaching staff

Arizona has undergone a complete regime change with head coach Bruce Arians leading the charge.

USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Cardinals are changing, due in large part to last year's failures.

After the ousting of Ken Whisenhunt, the Cardinals went out and hired Bruce Arians as their new head coach, a man who had guided the Indianapolis Colts to the playoffs after head coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia and missed 12 games.

Arians has been busy at work already in Arizona, putting together one of the bigger coaching staffs in the NFL. Arians has a staff of 21, including offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, according to the team’s official site.

This is Goodwin’s first crack at being a coordinator after serving as an offensive line coach for his entire career. Goodwin and Arians worked together last year with the Colts, giving Arians familiarity.

Bowles has a little more experience after serving as defensive coordinator last year with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Stump Mitchell and Darryl Drake were also signed on to coach the running back and wide receivers. Mitchell, a Cardinals running back for years, also was the backs coach when Shaun Alexander won the MVP in 2005 for the Seattle Seahawks.

Arians also will bring in some young coaches that he believes will be hungry and motivated, saying the salaries will be lower because that enables him to bring in more men.

The first-time head coach also kept a few coaches from the old regime, including John Lott and Pete Alosi, who are strength and conditioning; Freddie Kitchens with the quarterbacks; and Ryan Slowik with the defensive backs.

Arians’ staff is certainly a unique blend of young and old, experienced and inexperienced.
