Donald Driver retirement: Packers WR officially ends playing career

After 14 seasons in the NFL, Donald Driver retired on Wednesday, and ends his career as Green Bay’s all-time franchise leader in receptions and receiving yards.

Benny Sieu-US PRESSWIRE

Driver spent his entire 14-year professional career with the Green Bay Packers, recording more than 1,000 receiving yards in seven seasons -- exactly half of his career. Driver caught 743 receptions for 10,137 receiving yards and 61 touchdowns. Amazingly, he lost only four fumbles in his career. Driver also has a championship ring after helping the Packers defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.

A model of consistency, Driver appeared in at least 13 games in all but his rookie season and appeared in all 16 games on eight occasions.

Though Driver believes he could continue his playing career, he knew that he wasn’t in the Packers’ plans next year, and had no desire to play for any other team in the league.

"Even though I feel that I can still play the game, God has made the answer clear to me, the time is now," Driver said. "I have to retire a Green Bay Packer. I've always said I never wanted to wear another uniform, but always the green and gold."

Driver certainly left his mark with the Packers, as his 743 receptions and 10,137 receiving yards stand as franchise records -- and could stand as Packers records for quite awhile.

The state of Wisconsin honored Driver on Wednesday, declaring Wednesday “Donald Driver Day.“ Driver will also have a street in Green Bay named ”Donald Driver Way,” honoring the now-retired receiver’s contributions to the Green Bay franchise and community.
