Kirk Cousins ready to lead Redskins this offseason

Washington Redskins backup quarterback Kirk Cousins is ready to lead the Redskins this offseason, while Robert Griffin III recovers from reconstructive knee surgery.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Kirk Cousins isn't the starting quarterback of the Washington Redskins, but he'll have to act like it this offseason, while Robert Griffin III recovers from reconstructive knee surgery.

Cousins will be tasked with leading the Redskins’ workouts while Griffin III rehabilitates his knee. Although Griffin should be ready by the start of the season, there are no guarantees, and Cousins could be tasked with leading the Redskins for the first few weeks of the 2013 NFL season.

Consequently, Cousins is working on becoming not only a better quarterback this offseason, but a better leader as well.

“Now, in terms of my presence in the locker room and that kind of a thing, I’ll probably try to be a little more vocal so that I don’t come across to my teammates as somebody who’s afraid of that role or not comfortable in that role,” Cousins said. “It’ll be an interesting balance to have to walk because obviously I don’t want to step on anybody’s toes, but I also need to be ready if called upon.

Cousins appeared in three games for the Redskins in 2012, starting one. Cousins played well, completing 68.8 percent of his passes for 466 yards, while throwing four touchdowns and three interceptions, posting a quarterback rating of 101.6.

Washington selected Cousins in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft with the No. 102 overall pick -- exactly 100 picks after the Redskins selected Griffin.

Redskins fans will undoubtedly hope that Griffin is ready to begin the season, but at the least, the Redskins have a viable backup plan in Cousins -- who only figures to get better this offseason, as he serves as Washington’s No. 1 quarterback.
