Chris Canty released by New York Giants

The New York Giants released Chris Canty on Wednesday. Canty spent four seasons with the Giants, and helped the Giants win Super Bowl XLVI.

Chris Canty is New York's latest cap casualty. On Wednesday, the New York Giants
released the defensive lineman after he spent four seasons with the Giants.

This is just the latest in a flurry of roster moves. Earlier Wednesday, the Giants released running back Ahmad Bradshaw. Tuesday, the Giants released linebacker Michael Boley.

New York signed Canty prior to the 2009 season. He played in just eight games in 2009, but played 16 games in 2010 and 2011 -- and recorded six sacks during New York’s 2011 championship season.

Canty opened the 2012 season on the PUP list with a knee injury, and was limited to just nine games this season. Canty recorded just 26 tackles, but did register three sacks on the season. Canty sprained his MCL during New York's Week 16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, and missed Week 17.

New York would have owed Canty a $250,000 workout bonus if the team retained Canty throughout the offseason. Canty’s base salary for 2013 was $6.25 million.

Canty was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft, with the No. 132 overall pick. Canty spent four seasons with the Cowboys before signing with the Giants.

Injury prone and entering his age 31 season, Canty may have to settle for an incentive-based contract this offseason. When healthy, Canty remains productive, and was given a +6.6 rating by Pro Football Focus this past year.
