Eagles set to hire Browns’ Billy Davis as DC, according to report

The Philadelphia Eagles will hire former Cleveland Browns linebackers coach Billy Davis as their new defensive coordinator.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles will hire former Cleveland Browns linebackers coach Billy Davis as their new defensive coordinator, according to Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly. Davis has served as a defensive coordinator twice before, with the 49ers from 2005-06 and the Cardinals from 2009-10.

In both of his stints as a coordinator, Davis has run a 3-4 defense, which it appears the Eagles will transition to under new head coach Chip Kelly. Bleeding Green Nation has more on the hiring and notes that Davis has been a NFL assistant since 1992 and served under 3-4 masterminds such as Wade Phillips, Dom Capers and Mike Nolan.

Neither of the defenses he ran finished particularly well in the rankings, with his 49ers teams ranking 32nd and 26th in total defense and his Cardinals teams finishing 20th and 29th.

Davis interviewed with the Eagles on Sunday, Jan. 27, but the team just made the hire on Thursday. It was thought the Eagles were after some of the defensive assistants coaching in the Super Bowl, but they ended up hiring Davis. The 49ers blocked teams from interviewing secondary coach Ed Donatell for defensive coordinator positions, which may have pushed Philadelphia towards Davis.
