Shaun Cody injury: Texans NT had back surgery

The veteran played through a back injury during the 2012 season and had it repaired last week.

Houston Texans defensive tackle Shaun Cody had surgery last week to address a back injury. He needed "microscopic lumbar discectomy surgery for a lumbar disc herniation," according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Cody injured his back during the preseason, but he was able to play through it and appeared in 13 games for the Texans in 2012, making 12 starts. He finished the year with 17 tackles. Cody has been a mainstay in Houston's starting lineup since joining the team prior to the 2009 season -- he has made 57 career starts for the Texans, and racked up a career-high 38 tackles in 2010. Prior to his stint with Houston, he spent four seasons with the Detroit Lions, primarily as a reserve.

Cody is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, and his future with the Texans is unclear at this point. Houston may end up exploring replacement options in the 2013 NFL Draft.
