Super Bowl 2013: Jimmy Smith says he didn’t commit pass interference

Ravens defensive back Jimmy Smith may have held 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree on a late fourth down play, but no flag was thrown and he says none was warranted.

USA TODAY Sports

The 2013 Super Bowl ended in dramatic fashion, though it was not without some controversy. The Baltimore Ravens won the game with a late defensive stand, though defensive back Jimmy Smith may have gotten away with pass interference on the game-deciding fourth down play. Smith discussed the end of the game in a recent radio interview with 102.3 ESPN in Denver, and when asked if he thought he committed a penalty, he said no and defended his actions.

"If you look at the play closely, you see [Michael Crabtree] kind of push off of my helmet immediately," Smith said. "So as a DB, what do you do? ... If he's pushing off you gotta make sure you got some type of grip so he doesn't push off of you. If I never touch him at all and he catches the ball, then it'd be San Francisco winning and why didn't Jimmy make that play?"

San Francisco marched the ball inside the Baltimore 10-yard-line before the Ravens made their final stand. After taking over on downs, the Ravens were able to melt away the majority of the clock and hold on for a 34-31 victory.
