Panthers meet with Charlotte City Council about stadium update

The Panthers are working with Charlotte officials to acquire funds for a proposed renovation of Bank of America Stadium.

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and other team officials met with the Charlotte City Council on Friday to discuss upgrades to Bank of America Stadium, reports the Charlotte Observer. The team wants to make $250 million in upgrades that will include new escalators to the upper deck and new video boards.

“The process is continuing,” Richardson said. “We gave them a report about our trips to Raleigh [to meet with state government officials] and we’re continuing to work.”

Last month, the city council voted 7-2 in favor of the Panthers’ proposal to receive $125 million in public funds. That money would come from a local tax increase on prepared food and beverages. The Panthers have also approached the state about getting some funding, but N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis said he couldn’t support the use of state tax dollars on the renovations.

Bank of America Stadium opened in September of 1996; 2013 will be its 18th season hosting the Panthers.
