Browns offseason: Brandon Weeden expects strong competition at QB

Weeden is expecting to have to compete for the starting quarterback job this offseason, after the Browns made sweeping to the front office and coaching staff.

The Cleveland Browns made sweeping changes after winning just five games last season. The team's owner, president, general manager, head coach and coaching staff are all new this season. Quarterback may be the next step down the line, Brandon Weeden told the Associated Press.

Dawgs By Nature: Browns Finish Coaching Staff

“We’re talking about a multibillion-dollar corporation, essentially,” Weeden said. “There’s going to be changes. Obviously, we’ve already seen some. But there’s going to be competition. The guys that drafted me are no longer there, so I fully expect there to be competition. I would want competition. I want to go into camp and compete. If I had won 10 or 11 games last year, that may not be the case, but we weren’t able to get that done.”

Weeden threw just 14 touchdowns to 17 interceptions in his rookie season, and finished 29th among NFL starting quarterbacks with a 72.6 QB rating. New head coach Rod Chudzinski has said it would be “premature” to name Weeden the Browns’ starting quarterback for 2013, and owner Jimmy Haslam suggested than another quarterback may be brought in to compete for the starting job.

Weeden, 29, will have to improve in a hurry if he is going to convince the Browns to commit to him long term. New offensive coordinator Norv Turner could help. He has a history of developing quarterbacks, from Troy Aikman to Philip Rivers. Then again, there's a chance that Turner is pining for another starter as well. It's going to be an interesting offseason for Weeden.
