LSU Pro Day 2013: Tigers players scheduled for March 27 workout

A boatload of former Tigers will try to improve their draft status in one final performance at Death Valley.

USA TODAY Sports

Sixteen former Bayou Bengals will get one final chance to impress NFL executives when LSU holds its pro day on March 27. The Tigers feature one sure-fire first round selection, a pair of players who could potentially sneak into the first day and a handful of second- and third-day selections.

The headliner of LSU's pro day class is defensive end/outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo, who has ridden a strong NFL combine performance into the top 10 of many draft boards. Mingo projects as a pure pass rusher, perfect for an outside linebacker position in a 3-4 scheme. He did play defensive end in LSU's 4-3 alignment.

Two other LSU defenders, defensive end Sam Montgomery and inside linebacker Kevin Minter, could be taken in the first round of the draft. Montgomery has held steady as a late first round selection despite a strong performance at the combine. The unsung defensive end on LSU's 2012 defense, he projects as a strongside defensive end at the next level. Minter is widely considered the top inside linebacker in the 2013 draft class, but his position has been devalued in recent years by NFL executives, moving him down the board. Defensive tackle Bennie Logan, projected as a third-day selection, could move up with a solid performance.

Former LSU cornerback Tyrann Matthieu, who was dismissed from the program in August, will participate in the team's pro day. Matthieu, a darkhorse Heisman candidate before his dismissal, projects as a second- or third-round selection. His former secondary partner, safety Eric Reid, is one of the top free safeties this year, and should go on Day 2. Cornerback Tharold Simon is also a likely draft pick, though he may have to wait until the draft's final day to hear his name called.

On the offensive side of the ball, tackle Chris Faulk will attempt to improve on his current fourth round projection, while center P.J. Lonergan will try to move out of the draft's third day. Running back Michael Ford, a fringe selection, hopes to solidify his draft status.

Also participating in LSU's pro day will be offensive linemen Alex Hurst and Josh Dworaczyk, running back Spencer Ware, wide receiver Russell Sheppard, defensive end Lavar Edwards and punter Brad Wing.
