Cowboys salary cap 2013: Jay Ratliff could restructure contract

Dallas is strapped for cash and needs to make some cap space by Tuesday to avoid breaking rules.

Jim Rogash

The Dallas Cowboys need to work some magic between now and Tuesday afternoon to make sure they aren't getting a call from the league office.

Currently, the Cowboys are $6.8 million over the salary cap, meaning either a few players need to be cut or contracts need to be reworked, according to ESPN.com.

One of the big question marks is whether or not Dallas will give Tony Romo an extension. If it does, the contract can be written in a way to get the Cowboys underneath the 2013 cap without cutting anybody. However, does Dallas really want to give Romo a big contract after watching him fail miserably over and over again in big spots?

Another option is to restructure Jay Ratliff's deal. Ratliff is declining in skill, only making 16 tackles last season and failing to register a single sack. Yet, the Cowboys are paying him for four more years after handing him a 5-year/$40 million extension last summer.

Cutting Ratliff is out of the question with all the dead money it would create, but a restructure needs to be in the works.
