NFL free agency 2013: Giants trying to re-sign Martellus Bennett

The New York Giants are hoping to sign tight end Martellus Bennett prior to the start of free agency on Tuesday, according to a report.

The New York Giants are hoping to lock up tight end Martellus Bennett prior to the start of free agency on Tuesday. Via Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News:

The clock is ticking quickly with the free-agent market set to open on Tuesday afternoon, but the Giants haven't given up hope of signing their starting tight end.

It appears they are making a late - and possibly last - push to re-sign Martellus Bennett before the free agent signing period begins. The two sides have talked in the last few days, according to a source, and plan to talk more before the deadline.

Bennett, just 26 years old, is coming off a season in which he caught 55 passes for 626 yards and five touchdowns. The former Dallas Cowboy signed a 1-year, $2.5 million contract with New York last offseason. The athletic tight end could have several suitors when free agency opens, so it makes sense that the team would try to get a Bennett deal done before Tuesday.

The Giants are currently $9 million under the salary cap, but as Vacchiano notes, $6 to $7 million of that cap space will likely be used on running back Andre Brown, wide receiver Victor Cruz, and safety Stevie Brown.
