Broncos, Elvis Dumervil reach ‘impasse’ in negotiations

Elvis Dumervil may be hitting the free agent market when Tuesday afternoon rolls around. He and the Denver Broncos are not communicating well as of late.

Contract talks between Elvis Dumervil and the Denver Broncos have reportedly broken down, according to Mike Klis of The Denver Post. The two sides have not communicated well lately, which increases the likelihood Dumervil will be looking for a new team when free agency begins Tuesday afternoon.

Dumervil’s agent Marty Magid sent the Broncos a restructuring proposal this past Friday, but he hasn’t heard back from the team. Denver wants Dumervil to take a pay cut from the $12 million he is owed for 2013. If a new contract can’t be agreed upon, the Broncos could release their star pass rusher.

If Dumervil becomes a free agent, he will immediately boost the pass rushing class available this offseason. Dumervil recorded 11 sacks last season and has a total of 63.5 since entering the league back in 2006. He recorded a career-high 17 sacks in 2009.

Klis indicates Dumervil wants to stay in Denver, but the feeling may not be mutual for his price in the Mile High city. Osi Umenyiora, Dwight Freeney, Michael Bennett, and Paul Kruger currently headline the best pass rushers available. Dumervil jumps towards the top of that list if he is released.
