Steven Jackson rumors: Falcons, Lions among teams interested in RB

Steven Jackson is set to become arguably the biggest name free agent on the running-back market when NFL free agency begins Tuesday. Expect the Falcons and the Lions to be among the first teams to give him a call.

USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Falcons are reportedly showing interest in former St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson with NFL free agency set to begin at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. After releasing Michael Turner earlier this month, the Falcons have a big hole to fill at running back, and the veteran Jackson would be strong fit for the offense.

Jackson hit the free agent market after voiding the final year of his contract with the Rams. He was almost immediately pegged as a favorite to land with the Falcons due to his skill set. Jackson was more productive than Turner last season behind a shakier offensive line, and is a much better receiver out of the backfield. Jackson would also have a solid complement in Jacquizz Rodgers to take some of the load off.

The Detroit Lions, Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers and Cincinnati Bengals have also been linked to Jackson, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Detroit would be an intriguing landing spot, given the team's inability to find any consistency out of the backfield in recent years. Jackson could also save some wear on his legs with Mikel Leshoure able to split carries.

Jackson, 29, averaged 4.1 yards per carry last season, recording his eighth-straight season with over 1,000 yards rushing. He had over 300 total touches for the seventh time in his nine-year career.
