Jets rumors: New York could still sign Brady Quinn

The Jets may pursue Brady Quinn to push Mark Sanchez and the newly-signed David Garrard for playing time, according to reports. How desperate is New York?

Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Jets may not be done bringing in quarterback competition for Mark Sanchez. Rich Cimini of ESPN New York mentioned Monday that Brady Quinn may still be a free agent possibility, even with David Garrard in tow. Quinn is coming off a disastrous season with the Kansas City Chiefs, but these are troubling times in East Rutherford.

Quinn completed 57 percent of his passes in 10 games last season, throwing just two touchdowns to eight interceptions. He was dealt a poor hand, playing on a Chiefs squad racked with injuries, but even still, his iffy career track record would do little to energize a Jets fanbase weary from the Mike Tannenbaum era. Quinn did rise to the occasion in Week 13, going 19-or-23 passing for 201 yards and two touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers. Unfortunately, he did little before or after that week.

Quinn spent three years with the Cleveland Browns after being taken in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, but was traded to the Denver Broncos after the 2009 season. He spent his next three seasons on the bench and did not throw a pass again until last October when he entered the Chiefs' Week 7 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens after Matt Cassel was knocked out of the game with a concussion.

The Jets signed Garrard on Tuesday in hopes that he can push Sanchez in practice. Greg McElroy may also compete for playing time, though the first and only start of his career came in Week 16 against the San Diego Chargers. McElroy was sacked 11 times in the loss.
