Eric Winston rumors: Chargers hosted RT over weekend

The Chargers may have bigger needs along the offensive line, but adding free agent right tackle Eric Winston could go a long towards reviving a moribund running game.

Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Former Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Eric Winston may soon find himself playing for the division rival San Diego Chargers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Winston reportedly spent the weekend in San Diego, where the Chargers are looking to upgrade their offensive line. While there are bigger needs at left tackle and guard, Winston would likely be an upgrade over the occasionally-maligned Jeromey Clary.

The running game was one of the few bright spots for the Chiefs last season, and Winston played a big role in paving the way. Behind Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs averaged 4.8 yards per carry on the year. The Chargers, meanwhile, were second-to-last in the NFL averaging 3.6 YPC.

If the Chargers are committed to a zone blocking scheme next season, then Winston becomes an even bigger priority in free agency. Maybe not quite as big as figuring out what to do with Jared Gaither, but certainly up there for a team that has consistently prided itself on its running game.
