Jets will release Sione Pouha, according to report

The release of Pouha clears $3.8 million in cap space for the Jets.

The New York Jets are parting ways with defensive tackle Sione Pouha after eight seasons, according to a report from Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Pouha, 34, had agreed to a three-year deal worth $15 million in the 2012 offseason and by releasing the defensive tackle, the Jets clear $3.8 million in cap space, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. However, the release still represents over $2.3 million in dead money on the books for the Jets.

A third round selection in the 2005 NFL Draft, Pouha didn’t see much play time early in his career with the Jets, but took over as the full-time starting nose tackle in 2009. In his final season with the Jets, Pouha recorded one sack and 20 tackles, although he was slowed by a back injury that kept him out of the lineup for an extended period of time.

The Jets finished the season with the eighth ranked defense, but allowed the seventh most rushing yards and touchdowns.
