With only hours remaining before he becomes a free agent, cornerback Jerraud Powers and the Indianapolis Colts have yet to agree to terms on a new contract. However, Powers would prefer to remain in Indy, according to Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star.

Since the Colts selected him in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft, Powers hasn’t been able to play a full season. He played 12 games during his rookie year, which is tied for his career high. In 2012, Powers played just eight games, compiling 40 tackles, eight passes defended, one interception and one tackle for loss. In his career with the Colts, he has 210 tackles, 33 passes defended, six interceptions and 11 tackles for loss.

The issue between Powers and the Colts, per Chappell, is that the franchise views the four-year veteran out of Auburn as its No.2 cornerback, and he is likely looking for No. 1 money. Unfortunately for Powers, Indy has already given that kind of contract to Vontae Davis, who signed a five-year, $10.25 million deal before last season. Powers's agent, Cliff LaBoy, says the ball is in Indy's court:
“Indy has every opportunity to keep JP,” LaBoy wrote in a text to The Indianapolis Star. “They know where they need to be in keep him. Out of respect and appreciation for (general manager Ryan) Grigson and (coach Chuck) Pagano, both whom he admires greatly and because of the opportunity Jim Irsay has given him and how well he treats his players, JP has asked me to give them every opportunity to retain his services.”
Should Powers decide to part ways with his current team, he should have options on the open market. The San Diego Chargers could be a favorite, according to Chappell, as the Bolts' general manager is Tom Telesco, who was with the Colts when the team drafted powers. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had the NFL's worst secondary in 2012, are desperate for talent at cornerback, and the Cleveland Browns are looking for a corner or two, as well.
Whether or not Powers will remain in Indianapolis remains to be seen. We’ll likely know in a few hours.
